Horses food - What kind of food do horses eat?

Horse factsThere are a lot of horse’s favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Some typical foods are: grass, hay, concentrates, and treats.

Hay

Hay is sold in bales with each bale being made up of between 10 to 14 flakes (slices of the bale). Hay is also sold in cube or pellet form. There are several different types of hay including alfalfa, timothy, oat, bermuda, and orchard.

Concentrates

Grains like oats, barley and corn are also known as concentrates. They are often pre-packaged and come in combinations designed for very specific needs. For example, there are feeds for older horses, horses that compete, and younger horses.

Treats & Water

Treats like apples and carrots are relished by horses and they’re good for a horse as well. It’s important to remember that a horse needs up to 12 gallons of fresh, clean water a day. That’s a lot more than 8 glasses!
Other treats that are generally safe:
  • Watermelon (including the rind)
  • Apricots (without the pit)
  • Bananas (including the peel)
  • Beets
  • Berries
  • Celery
  • Cherries
  • Coconut
  • Dates (pitted)
  • Grapes (and raisins)
  • Grapefruit
  • Lettuce
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Mango
  • Melons
  • Oranges
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Peanuts (roasted, never raw)
  • Pineapple
  • Plums
  • Squash
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Tangerines

Amount

Generally speaking, an active, healthy horse needs 2 to 2.5 pounds of feed for every 100 pounds of his weight. An average 1,000 lb horse needs 20 to 25 lbs of feed a day. A typical diet for a horse being ridden for one hour for five days a week would be 2 to 5 pounds of concentrates and 15 to 20 pounds of hay per day.

Frequency

Because horses have a small stomach relative to their size, they eat little and often. A horse kept in a stable needs food spread out, preferably in two to three feedings a day. Horses should never go more than eight hours without food.

PAX 2016: SONIC MANIA HAS ME EXCITED

Get some of new games coming out and the reviews
Ten seconds into playing Sonic Mania, I was immediately hit with a flood of memories. At a PAX demo station equipped with classic SEGA Genesis controllers, Sonic Mania’s demo began with the classic Green Hill Zone, in gorgeous HD and looking better than ever, but simultaneously just how I remembered it.

This time around, though, levels from the original Sonic, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles have been slightly remixed (you might find elements from Sonic 3 in the original Green Hill Zone, for example) but still retain their classic Sonic flavor.

But the real magic of Sonic Mania comes in the new levels done in the old school style. We played a new zone called Studiopolis set in a TV station. We jumped off of classic Sonic bumpers and springs, but also warped through TV satellite dishes, fought off enemies shooting film strips, and even crashed through gigantic popcorn machines, all at break-neck speed in classic Sonic fashion.
Sonic Mania seems to really understand what makes Sonic fun. Platforming felt just right and reminded me why I used to like playing the series on Genesis in the first place, and I’m tremendously excited to see what Sonic Team and the group of smaller teams they’re working with can come up with for the new areas.

We only saw a couple levels for now, but Sonic Mania is shaping up to be the return to form that I’ve been hoping for from 2D Sonic, in a way that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 never quite provided. Hopefully when Sonic Mania arrives next year, it will be the 25th anniversary present our blue hedgehog friend deserves.

Sonic Mania will come to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017.
